Hypnosis is a natural state of consciousness that most people will have experienced at some time or another, probably without realising they were in a state of trance.  It allows us to access knowledge, resources and capabilities that are not readily available at a conscious level.  These resources can be used in ways that lead to constructive and beneficial change.  


When you access a state of hypnosis you remain fully in control of your actions and the whole ethos of hypnotherapy and clinical hypnosis is to give you greater power, control and autonomy in the world around you.  The image of the stage hypnotist 'making' a subject bark like a dog or run around like a chicken is a carefully crafted illusion and does great disservice to the powerful, ethical and humane applications of therapeutic hypnosis.


Whilst the therapeutic use of hypnosis is still viewed by some as a complementary or 'alternative' treatment, separate from orthodox medical treatment, this is not the case.  Indeed the British Medical Association (BMA) formally acknowledged the  value of hypnotherapy in 1955.  


More recently the National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE), which advises the Department of Health, called upon hypnotherapy to be made more widely available.  On the right is a list of just some of the conditions and problems which can often be responsive to hypnotherapy.
